How to Build An iPhone Web App - Part 1
Posted at 2:45 PM by Cameron Westland in Tutorials
I've been trying to figure out what the best way to share some of the ideas we've been coming up with over the last few months. Instead of doing a bunch of case studies, or trying to get permission from some of our higher profile clients, we've decided to do a short series on how to build an iPhone web application.

Response to Adictio’s Audio ga-ga
Posted at 8:41 AM by Cameron Westland in
Jeremy Keith wonders about the new audio elements and tries to figure out ways to not auto-load the files:
There appears to be no way of stopping this through the DOM. There’s a whole slew of properties that can be specified in the markup or manipulated with [removed]
One thing he could try is showing a proxy that gets replaced when the user interacts with it by creating the audio element via the dom. Of course this would require javascript, but would solve the problem for a great majority of users.

Combining CSS For Production Use
Posted at 5:17 PM by Cameron Westland in Tutorials
This article shows how we've been combining our cascading stylesheets for production usage. We use a combination of a rake script, a borrowed class from the folks over at Prototype.js and a little PHP. This lets us have multiple stylesheets files in development, but then combines them into a single one ready for deployment on the server.

Seth Godin on current events:
Growth is frightening for a lot of people. It brings change and the opportunity for public failure. So if the astrological signs aren't right or the water is too cold or we've got a twinge in our elbow, we find an excuse. We decide to do it later, or not at all.

CSS Systems for writing maintainable CSS
Posted at 1:30 PM by Cameron Westland in Technology,Outside the Big Bang
I gave a talk this morning at BarCamp London 5 about CSS Systems, a new term that I am using to define a top-down approach to architecting a site's CSS.
A CSS System is a reusable set of content-oriented markup patterns and associated CSS created to express a site's individual design. It is the end result of a process that emphasizes up-front planning, loose coupling between CSS and markup, pre-empting browser bugs and overall robustness. It also incorporates a shared vocabulary for developers to communicate the intent of the code.

Five CSS design browser differences I can live with
Posted at 8:48 AM by Cameron Westland in Outside the Big Bang
The belief that all browsers should see the same design often requires us to resort to presentational markup, forked CSS and JavaScript DOM wizardry

The Wireframe Graph Paper Notepad is made for visual designers, interaction designers, and information architects designing for the screen. The notepad has 50 sheets at 8 1/2 x 11 inches on white 70# paper, glued on the left side. The ink is a non-photo blue (cyan) so that the grid lines and any sketch lines made in non-photo blue pencil can be knocked out when scanned and processed in graphics software.

For anyone who hasn't heard of Fire Vox, it is a free, open source screen reader extension for Firefox that works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Among other things it has support for WAI-ARIA and the CSS3 Speech Module, and is a good alternative to VoiceOver if you're on a Mac and need a screen reader for web browsing (or testing).

We’re Never Content
Posted at 8:22 AM by Cameron Westland in Technology
We've got something new and cool in the works and I'm excited to be able to tell you a little bit about it today!
Before the end of the year we are planning to release a new service for content delivery. This new (and as yet unnamed) service will provide you with a high performance way to distribute popular, publicly readable content to your customers all over the world, with low latency and high data transfer rates.
This is great news. I've just been involved with a project that used Akamai and I think they will finally have some cheap competition to shake things up.

Bluff: Beautiful graphs in JavaScript
Posted at 2:36 PM by Cameron Westland in Javascript
Bluff is a JavaScript port of the Gruff graphing library for Ruby. It is designed to support all the features of Gruff with minimal dependencies; the only third-party scripts you need to run it are a copy of JS.Class (about 2kb gzipped) and a copy of Google’s ExCanvas to support canvas in Internet Explorer. Both these scripts are supplied with the Bluff download. Bluff itself is around 8kb gzipped.
